Reflective Address Sign

$20.00

Firefighters and other first responders need to be able to find you in an emergency—even under smoky conditions. California code requires addresses be marked by REFLECTIVE SIGNS, clearly visible from both directions on the roadway. To make Mendocino County better prepared for wildfires and other emergencies, the Mendocino County Fire Safe Council has initiated a “Reflect to Protect” program. For a donation of $20, you can obtain a custom, two-sided, green-and-white address sign for your home.  NOTE: SIGNS MUST BE PICKED UP IN UKIAH. WE DO NOT MAIL THEM.

Please review the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS below before making your request.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • You will be notified when your sign is ready and can be picked up IN UKIAH. While COVID protocols are in place signs are located outside on the front porch at 725 Vichy Hills Drive, Ukiah.   They are sorted in alphabetical order by last name.

    We Do Not mail signs.

  • We accept orders paid by check and submitted via US Mail. Please include in your order a name, the address number(s), adequate funds ($20 per sign), and contact information (we prefer both email and telephone).

  • We distribute signs nearly at cost, and do not offer discounts.

  • You will use a discount code at the time you place your online sign order.  Please call our office at 707-462-3662 or email king@firesafemendocino.org to obtain the code.  Or, if you order by mail, note "with membership discount" on your check or elsewhere in your correspondence.

  • Signs are 6" x 18" x .063 gauge aluminum, pre-drilled with 1/4" diameter holes one inch in from each corner (4" apart on the short side). The surface is covered with reflective green vinyl, not painted, which will not fade. This vinyl surface covers the four mounting holes so only those used for mounting need to be pierced. The aluminum is heavy enough that the sign can be mounted from one end, like a flag, and you don't have to worry about it sagging or bending.

  • Yes, we can accommodate a large sign order paid by check(s) and submitted via US Mail or dropped at our office. Please be sure to include the requested numbers, adequate funds ($20 per sign), a contact name, and contact information (we prefer both email and telephone) and send to:

    Mendocino County Fire Safe Council
    PO Box 263
    Ukiah, CA 95482

  • Signs do not come with a pole. People often purchase sign mounting hardware at local hardware and farm supply stores. Common green "U" or "T" posts are easiest to use when they have predrilled holes that are 4" apart, matching the predrilled holes in our signs. Usually, Tractor Supply has had 60" posts with holes 4" apart and Friedman’s has had 72" inch posts with holes 4” apart, for around $5. Depending on the store they are called "U-posts", "Utility Posts", "garden posts", "light duty fence posts" or "Green U-posts".

    Places to find Post:

    Friedman's

"U-post Green" are found in Aisle 49, on the right side, in vertical racks next to the post drivers. They have 48", 60" and 72". You may find the sizes mixed in the racks.

I recommend the 60" (5 foot); with two feet driven into the ground, the sign will be displayed three feet above the ground. These posts also have pre-drilled holes 4" apart at the top. Our signs are pre-drilled with 1/4" holes 1" in at each corner (4' spacing when mounted horizontally, 16" if mounted vertically). The 4' post's holes are 3" apart; the 6' posts have no holes. At the worst, only a little reaming will be needed when using the 60" posts.

    Costs: 48" = $4.68;  60" = $4.98;  72" = $5.98.

    Tractor Supply

"Utility Post" or "Light Duty Fence Posts" are found near the center of the rear wall of the store.

5' posts have holes pre-drilled 4-1/2" apart and cost  $5.49.  4' posts have holes spaced 4" apart and cost $4.99.

    Home Depot

Posts are in two locations, depending on size, both in the far right aisle (the restroom side of the store.)

4' "Green U-posts" are on the right hand side, past the restrooms, stored in horizontal bins. they cost $5.58 and have holes 5" apart.

5' "Green U-posts" are at the end of the same aisle but on the left-hand side, stored vertically at the left end of the T-post racks (almost hidden).  They cost $6.28 and hole spacing is 4-1/2".

  • The time it takes for our volunteers to make signs varies, but they are usually done within of a couple of weeks from receipt of donation.

  • Yes, you can specifically request a vertical sign by including the word “vertical” with your address number. However, the default and recommended orientation is horizontal. Emergency responders prefer a horizontal sign because it is easier to read.

  • Yes, we can accommodate a letter or small arrow (< or >) in your address if your street number is 4 digits or less.  For an additional fee we can accommodate 5 numbers with an arrow by using a larger sign.   We can add a small letter suffix on a 4 number address sign.  If one of the digits is a "1" an arrow can fit with a 5 number address.

  • Signs are generally limited to 5 numbers.  If your address has more numbers, please contact us at firesafe@pacific.net to determine if we have a supply of oversized signs.  If we can handle the order, some additional fee may apply.

  • No.  We only provide numerical signs at this time.

  • Please contact king@firesafemendocino.org if you need more information.
