Mower Rental

Reduce fire fuels in your community

The Mendocino County Fire Safe Council (MCFSC) owns an RC Mower Model R-60 — a remote-controlled, track-driven mower with a 60-inch cutting width. Designed for hillside and steep-incline terrain, the mower is ideal for roadside maintenance, fire fuel reduction, and other vegetation management tasks. It can cut through brush up to 1.5 inches in diameter, including dense vegetation such as poison oak and other roadside shrubs.

There are five ways the mower can be used for fuel reduction in Mendocino County, listed below in priority project order:

  1. MCFSC Crew Projects – The mower is used by MCFSC staff to increase the efficiency of vegetation management projects.

  2. Mendocino Prescribed Burn Association  – To assist with creating control lines for planned prescribed burns.

  3. NFSC Projects – For use in support of existing grant-funded activities such as chipper days or community work parties, carried out by MCFSC crews.

  4. NFSC Rentals for Qualified Projects – Available for rent by NFSCs for eligible projects. Rental requires payment for the rental and for one day of training time by an MCFSC employee for all NFSC operators and the completion of a rental agreement. Note: This does not include use on individual private properties.

  5. Private Property Rentals – When not in use for the above priorities, the mower is available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis. Renters must pay for either a) two MCFSC employees to survey, staff and operate the mower and any other direct costs associated with its usage, plus the rental fee or b) commit to being on site to assist with site surveillance for the entirely of the job and pay for an MCFSC employee to run the mower, and any other direct costs associated with its usage, plus the rental fee. Renter must have water resources available for fire suppression near the worksite.
