Doom the broom
Borrow a Weed Wrench – Doom the Broom!
Broom is a highly flammable, fast-spreading invasive plant that thrives in disturbed or post-fire areas, quickly outcompeting native vegetation. Worse yet, it's a prolific seed producer—one plant can produce up to 3,500 seed pods and release more than 20,000 seeds, many of which can remain viable for years.
But there’s good news: you can take action!
The Mendocino County Fire Safe Council has a number of weed wrenches available for loan. These powerful, easy-to-use tools are perfect for removing mature broom plants and other stubborn weeds—roots and all. Individuals and community groups can borrow a weed wrench for one week at a time, with extensions available if no one else is waiting.
Our weed wrenches are available for pick-up and drop-off in Ukiah unless other arrangements are made.
Timing Is Key to Success!
For best results, it's important to remove the broom at the right time of year—typically before it flowers and sets seed. Keep in mind, broom seeds can germinate for many years, so persistent annual removal efforts, especially during the first 1–3 years, are critical to success.
By working together and staying committed, we can significantly reduce the broom seed bank and move toward broom-free communities.
