Mendocino National Forest
Resource Advisory Committee

The purpose of the Mendocino National Forest Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) is to improve collaborative relationships and to provide advice and recommendations to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. This relationship is part of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000. It is a nationwide effort to stabilize federal payments to counties and provide projects that will enhance and improve land health and water quality within National Forests and adjoining areas. This type of payment comes under the “Payment to States Act” that covers the loss of timber production in the county.

The RAC chose several projects through the years from 2004 until 2007. The projects are

Eel River Campground Accessibility;
-
Daylight M1 Road;
-
Hammerhorn noxious weed eradication;
-
Long Doe Ridge road decommission and fencing;
-
Newhouse wildlife burn;
-
Anthony Peak and Little Baldy Interpretative signs;
-
replacement of bathrooms at Hammerhorn and Little Doe Campgrounds;
-
upgrading water system at Hammerhorn Campground;
-
wildlife structures around various springs;
-
Howard Lake campground maintenance and upgrades;
-
Little Doe Campground rehab;
-
Howard Lake Canary grass removal;
-
Travelers Home and Hell Hole trail maintenance;
-
Howard Lake Fuel Break;
-
Howard Slide road improvement;
-
new Greensprings Wilderness trailhead campsites;
-
native plants on Howard Slide;
-
wilderness latrines on Hell Hole trail;
-
support of the pamphlet Living with Wildfire in Mendocino County;
-
Middle Fork Eel River Summer Steelhead Count;
-
Autophotography kids in the woods project;
-
and resurfacing some of Forest Highway 7.
The Forest Service would like to thank all the past and present RAC members. They have worked hard to figure out what projects were good for the public and for the forest.
